Roughly 10% of physician assistants are currently represented by unions, and nearly half of PAs believe unionization will become more common, according to a July 9 Medscape report.
“A Union in Scrubs: Medscape Physician Assistants and Unions Report 2025” surveyed 2,066 PAs across 29 specialties between November 25 and February 28.
Here are four findings:
1. Around one in 10 (9%) PAs are represented by a union at work.
2. About 7% of respondents said the possibility of unionizing was being considered at their work. Eighty-three percent said no organizing efforts or actions to bring about a vote were underway.
3. About 39% of PAs said they believe unions are effective or extremely effective at representing their interests. In general, PAs also feel that unions represent their specialty well.
4. Among PAs, 48% believe unionization will rise in the next five years, compared to 5% who predicted it will decline.
