Allegheny Health Network appoints COO, chief quality officer

Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network has appointed two leaders to executive roles.

Lou Baverso will serve as AHN’s new COO, and president of AHN hospitals, effective Sept. 8, according to a July 8 health system news release. 

Mr. Baverso joins AHN from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System, where he served as the system’s COO since September 2023.

He also previously served as market president for Pittsburgh-based UPMC’s Central Pennsylvania region.

In his new role, he will help direct AHN’s long-term operational strategy as well as lead the day-to-day operations of the network’s hospitals, ambulatory services, and facilities and construction, according to the release.

AHN has also appointed Ezz-Eldin “Dean” Moukamal, MD, chief quality officer. 

Dr. Moukamal has been serving in the role on an interim basis since 2024, according to the release. 

Additionally, he has served as the chief medical officer of AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, Pa., for the last seven years.

In his new role, Dr. Moukamal leads quality and safety strategies across AHN, according to the release.

AHN is a 14-hospital system with 21,000 employees.
