Novi, Mich.-based Trinity Health has signed a letter of intent to acquire Mercy Hospital & Medical Center in Chicago, according to a Crain’s Chicago Business report.
The two organizations have held informal merger discussions for about a year, according to Mercy CEO Sister Sheila Lyne. Mercy, located in Chicago’s Near South Side, operates a 479-bed hospital and 11 clinics.
If the deal goes through, it would be Trinity’s second acquisition in the Chicago area. In July, the 47-hospital chain paid $88 million for Loyola University Health System in Maywood, Ill.
