David Westfall Bates, MD. Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Patient Safety. Dr. Bates is a practicing general internist who also serves as the senior vice president and chief innovation officer of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a professor of health policy and management at the Harvard School of Public Health, both in Boston. Dr. Bates directs the Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, serves as the external program head for research in the World Health Organization’s Global Alliance for Patient Safety and acts as medical director of clinical and quality analysis for Boston-based Partners Healthcare.
