Sutter Medical Center‘s Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute was opened in 1957. Sutter Heart and Vascular Institute conducted the first successful open-heart surgery in the Greater Sacramento area. It was recognized by CareChex as number one in the state of California for major cardiac surgery and number two in the nation for heart transplant for 2014. The Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute was named one of the nation’s 50 top cardiovascular hospitals for 2014 by Truven Health Analytics and is fully accredited as an Atrial Fibrillation and Chest Pain Center from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
