Hospitals add nearly 16k jobs in August

The healthcare industry added 40,500 jobs last month, contributing to the nation's 173,000 new jobs in August, according to the most recent jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This is a significant increase from July's numbers, when healthcare added just 27,900 jobs. Over the past year, healthcare has added 457,000 jobs.

Within the healthcare industry, hospital employment grew by 15,900 jobs in August. However, ambulatory healthcare services added the most, with 21,100 jobs. Most of those came from physician offices (6,900) but outpatient care centers (1,600) and home healthcare services (5,800) also contributed.

Nursing and residential care facilities added 3,500 jobs last month.
