Resident physicians and fellows at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence voted to ratify their first union contract, with 95% of participating members voting in favor, according to a news release from the Committee of Interns and Residents shared with Becker’s.

The union represents about 700 residents and fellows at the hospital, part of Providence-based Brown University Health. The three-year contract, which runs through June 30, 2029, includes a 12% total increase to base pay, reduced health insurance premiums, expanded lactation accommodations and 401(k) matching of up to 6%, according to the union.

“We believe that the people of Rhode Island deserve excellent care and we want to do everything in our power to advocate for that, while making sure that we’re also able to care for ourselves and attend to our own well-being,” Ben Raymond-Kolker, MD, an internal medicine-pediatrics resident, said in the release.

Hospital spokesperson Kelly Brennan said in a statement to Becker’s that the agreement “is the result of productive discussions and the dedication of both negotiating teams.”

Rhode Island Hospital is the first of four hospitals in the state where physicians unionized with CIR in 2025 to reach a contract. Contract negotiations are underway at Women & Infants and Butler hospitals, both based in Providence, and Kent Hospital in Warwick, the union said.
