Healthcare laundry accreditation group weighs in on UPMC mold outbreak's new linens link

A recently released report from Pittsburgh-based UPMC found mold on bed linens supplied by DuBois, Pa.-based Paris Healthcare Linen Services, presenting a possible cause for a mold outbreak discovered in 2015 that was tied to five patient deaths. Now, the organization that accredited Paris has weighed in on the news.

Gregory Gicewicz, the past president of the Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council told Trib Live its standards "deal with processing healthcare laundry in the safest manner possible for patient safety, staff safety and employee safety."

The council could not further comment because Paris is facing litigation.

Even though the report from UPMC found "heavy fungal growth" on sheets from a linen cart delivered by Paris to UPMC and also fungus at the Paris facility and on its roof, according to Trib Live, the CDC and state health department will not further investigate UPMC's mold outbreak.

Paris Healthcare Linen Services' HLAC accreditation will expire in December 2018, according to the report.
