7 stroke statistics to know

Stroke represents the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. To boost stroke awareness and recognize May as American Stroke Month, WalletHub compiled a report highlighting statistics about the disease's prevalence in 2017.

Here are seven statistics to know.

  1. Each year, 133,000 Americans die from a stroke.

  1. More than one-third (35 percent) of Americans have experienced at least one symptom of a mini stroke, or transient ischemic attack.

  1. The number of strokes in the U.S is expected to increase by 20.5 percent between 2012 and 2030.

  1. The average hospital cost for a stroke victim is $21,826.

  1. Strokes costs the U.S. economy $34 billion annually.

  1. Ten percent of stroke survivors make a full recovery, and 25 percent recover with minor impairments. Forty percent of survivors experience moderate to severe impairments that require special care.

  1. Fourteen percent of stroke survivors experience a second stroke within a year of the first.
