Former CEO of West Virginia hospital sued for defamation

A physician has sued Bluefield (W.Va.) Regional Medical Center and former hospital CEO Gigi Fergus for defamation, according to the West Virginia Record

In his lawsuit, Phillip A. Peterson, MD, claims he has suffered damages due to false statements made by Ms. Fergus in a letter to the Virginia Board of Medicine and the Virginia Department of Health Professionals. The letter allegedly said Dr. Peterson had failed to appropriately maintain prescription data and medical records, according to the report.

The lawsuit further alleges Ms. Fergus falsely reported to police that Dr. Peterson was dangerous and in possession of numerous firearms.

Dr. Peterson has requested a trial by jury.

Bluefield Regional Medical Center did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
