MemorialCare to cut 194 jobs as part of San Clemente hospital closure: 3 things to know

Fountain Valley, Calif.-based MemorialCare Health System will cut 194 jobs as part of its planned closure of Saddleback Memorial – San Clemente (Calif.), according to an Orange County Business Journal report, which cites a state filing.

Here are three things to know about the layoffs.

1. The layoffs will take effect May 31, the same day the hospital is slated to close. The primary reason for the closure is declining patient volumes. Hospital officials said many days there are less than 10 inpatients at the hospital, and the number of inpatient surgeries has dropped to less than one a day.

2. According to Tony Struthers, administrator of the San Clemente campus, 115 of the affected positions are full time. The rest are part time or per diem, and the majority of the remainder are per diem.

3. Saddleback is working with its employees to identify job opportunities within the healthcare system at its hospitals and numerous healthcare facilities, holding job fairs and providing one-on-one assistance, Mr. Struthers said.
