Atlanta clinic discovers 15-month breach while investigating separate ransomware attack

Atlanta-based Peachtree Neurological Clinic uncovered a 15-month breach to its computer system while investigating a separate ransomware attack, the clinic's lawyer confirmed to Becker's.

The clinic did not disclose when the ransomware attack occurred or how many individuals were affected, but said the ransomware virus encrypted data in its EMR. PNC did not pay the ransom and was able to restore its files through backup records.

During the investigation, PNC discovered its computer system had been accessed by unauthorized individuals not affiliated with PNC between February 2016 and May 2017. The clinic said it was not able to confirm whether the unauthorized individuals accessed patient files or information from its EMR.

PNC has notified all individuals who might be affected.
