What physicians think they should be earning

Physicians bring home considerable paychecks — in fact it is the highest paying profession in the U.S. in 2016, according to Glassdoor. Data from Medscape's latest Physician Compensation Report shows average annual physician compensation ranges from $204,000 for pediatricians to $443,000 for orthopedists.

Medscape also surveyed physicians across specialties to see if they were satisfied with their level of compensation. While many physicians are satisfied with this compensation, some are not — and those who are least satisfied may not be the lowest earners. Here, ranked from most to least satisfied with compensation, is how six specialties compare.

Dermatologists — 66 percent satisfied ($381,000 average annual earnings)

Pathologists — 63 percent ($266,000)

Emergency medicine physicians — 60 percent ($322,000)

Cardiologists — 48 percent ($410,000)

Orthopedics — 44 percent ($443,000)

Endocrinologists — 42 percent ($206,000)
