5 states with the highest, lowest percentage of active female physicians in 2018

Massachusetts had the highest number of active female physicians in 2018, according to the 2019 State Physician Workforce Data Report.

The report — published by the Association of American Medical Colleges — showed 35.8 percent of the nation's active physicians in 2018 were female. Among states, Massachusetts had the highest percentage of active female physicians in 2018 (42.4 percent), while Utah had the lowest (24.6 percent).

Five states with the highest percentage of active female physicians in 2018, according to the report:

1. Massachusetts: 42.4 percent

2. Vermont: 41.7 percent

3. Rhode Island: 41.1 percent

4. Maryland: 41 percent

5. Oregon: 39.3 percent

Five states with the lowest percentage of active female physicians in 2018:

1. Utah: 24.6 percent

2. Wyoming: 26 percent

3. Idaho: 26.3 percent

4. Mississippi: 27.2 percent

5. Arkansas: 27.9 percent
