Here are four things to know about the new wage.
1. The new wage is an increase from the hospital’s current minimum wage of about $12 an hour.
2. The new wage will take effect early next year, giving a raise to about 850 employees, or about 13 percent of the hospital’s workforce, according to The Boston Globe.
3. Beth Israel is the third large Boston teaching hospital to commit to the new wage. Tufts Medical Center and Boston Medical Center have also recently committed to raise starting pay to $15 per hour.
4. Beth Israel CEO Kevin Tabb, MD, touted the decision to raise starting pay. “BIDMC has always tried to pay a competitive wage,” he said in a memo to workers, according to The Boston Globe. “We have also had a multiyear plan to raise our minimum wage to $15/hour. It’s the right thing to do, and thanks to our strong performance recently we are now in a position to accelerate our plans.”
