6 things to know about contract negotiations between Nathan Littauer Hospital and nurses union

About 16 months after their contract expired, nurses at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, N.Y., continue to try to reach a new deal with the hospital, according to a report from The Leader-Herald.

Here are six things to know about the contract and the ongoing negotiations.

1. Negotiations are focused on staffing numbers, according to spokeswoman for the New York State Nurses Association.

2. The spokeswoman claims the hospital does not want the new contract to include language that would enforce an increase in staffing to keep a specific staff-to-nurse ratio.

3. The hospital previously claimed the union's staffing proposal would add $4 million annually to expenses.

4. The union is also demanding about $5.1 million in additional benefits over the life of a three-year contract, hospital officials previously said, according to the report.

5.  Negotiations between the union and hospital have been ongoing since November 2013.

6. The union represents about 140 employees at the hospital.
