The commission alleged that Google violated antitrust laws by forcing smartphone manufacturers to install its apps with its Android operating system.
“The thing that Google has to do now is of course to stop,” said Margrethe Vestager, the European commissioner of competition, according to CNBC. “This of course will free up the market to allow mobile manufacturers to use other Android systems.”
However, President Trump took the fine as a disadvantage to American economic interests.
“I told you so! The European Union just slapped a Five Billion Dollar fine on one of our great companies, Google. They truly have taken advantage of the U.S., but not for long!” President Trump tweeted.
