Google hit with $5B fine for antitrust violations in Europe: 5 things to know

The European Commission fined Google $5 billion for  violating antitrust laws, according to CNN.

Here are five things to know:

1. The commission accused Google of unfairly promoting its own apps by requiring smartphone manufacturers to install Google Search and Chrome apps as a condition to license the Google App store.

2. Google also prevented manufacturers from selling devices that use alternative versions of the Android operating system.

3. This is the largest fine ever imposed by the commission, and Google was told to end this practice within 90 days or risk facing more penalties.

4. "Google has used Android as a vehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine," said Margrethe Vestager, Europe's top antitrust official, according to CNN. "They have denied European consumers the benefits of effective competition in the important mobile sphere."

5. Last year, the European Commission fined Google $2.8 billion for prioritizing its shopping service over competitors in its search results.
