The beds would have filled two vacant floors of the Center for Care and Discovery, which opened February 2013. The $125 million project would also have increased the total number of ICU and observation beds operated by the school of medicine, though the number of med-surg beds would have remained constant.
While three of nine members of the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board were absent for the project vote, which required five ‘yes’ votes to pass but received only four, the board had issued a report two weeks prior to the vote stating its opinion that the number of medical-surgical beds at the school of medicine already exceeded its needs.
