4 Most Common Reasons for ED Visits

According to data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the four most common reasons for an emergency department visit are abdominal pain, sprains and strains, respiratory infections and superficial injuries.

While these complaints are the most common ones across the country, they differ by region. The following complaints top the list of reasons for ED visits in each of the four major U.S. regions:

Midwest — respiratory infections

Northeast — superficial injury

South — sprains and strains

West — abdominal pain
