The hospital shut down after discovering the first package in the emergency department. A staff member removed the object and the bomb squad responded. A second package was found and also disabled by the bomb squad, according to the hospital’s statement.
“Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of our patients and co-workers, the emergency department diverted incoming patients to other facilities during the investigation,” the hospital statement reads.
A CBS St. Louis report says the packages were brought into the hospital by a mental health patient. The first was the size of a cell phone and the second was a duffle bag, according to the report. Police were unable to confirm if the packages had explosive materials, but were able to render them safe, according to the report.
