Fifty-six-year-old Jeffrey Sargent received the transplant Aug. 23, which was a last resort treatment for heart failure from a particularly difficult case of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition that increases blood pressure in the lungs in such a way that pulmonary circulation is restricted and extra stress is put on the heart.
The transplant team was led by Asghar Khaghani, MD, surgical director of the Richard DeVos Lung Transplant Program at Spectrum Health.
Mr. Sargent has since been released from the hospital and is steadily improving, according to the report.
