This ruling is part of a longstanding dispute between Coastal Carolina Hospital and MRI at Belfair in Bluffton, S.C., a medical imaging center. The argument centers on requirements for state approval of the hospital’s projects.
Coastal Carolina Hospital acquired a portable MRI in 2006 to serve patients until they could build a $3.2 million fixed indoor imaging unit, a plan approved by the state. When the hospital decided to instead spend $800,000 to make the mobile MRI permanent, MRI at Belfair argued the hospital needed to file a separate application for state approval.
MRI at Belfair brought the case to an administrative law court, which ruled in the hospital’s favor. The imaging center appealed, but the South Carolina Court of Appeals’ recent ruling gave Coastal Carolina the victory.
