Ms. Burwell — formerly the director of the Office of Management and Budget — replaces Kathleen Sebelius, who decided to step down in April in the wake of a glitch-ridden rollout for the federal health insurance exchange website, HealthCare.gov.
Ms. Burwell gained support from both sides of the aisle, with 20 Republicans voting along with Democrats to approve her nomination, according to the report. During her confirmation hearings, she has called the technical problems that plagued the federal exchange site, HealthCare.gov, “unacceptable” and said repairing any remaining issues would be a top priority for her as the head of HHS. Additionally, she told the Senate Finance Committee the government should “use the full force of the law” to recover federal money spent improperly on flawed state exchanges.
