Seattle Children’s Hospital Demands Action on Its Plans for Expansion

Officials from Seattle Children’s Hospital have asked the city council to make rendering a decision on the hospital’s plan for expansion a priority for the end of 2009 through early 2010, after nearly two and half years in development, according to a report in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The plan calls for Children’s Hospital to expand from 250 to 600 beds in 20 years, as officials say the hospital is operating at 85 percent and sometimes at capacity, according to the report. The expansion plan would be completed in phases, with the first ending in 2012.

Representatives from Seattle’s city council said that with 11 separate parties involved and eight days of hearing, the paperwork regarding the expansion is “voluminous,” according to the report. The council’s land-use committee is expected to take up the expansion on Nov. 18, but proper groundwork must be in place before it can do so.

Laurelhurst Community Club, which is located near the proposed expansion site, has opposed the plan. The hearing examiner also raised concerns in August about the plans citing issues such as traffic problems, according to the report.
