Outpatient Visits Handled by a PA or Advance Practical Nurse on the Rise

The percentage of hospital outpatient department visits that were handled by a physician assistant or advanced practice nurse has increased from 1999-2009, according to recent statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These visits include those handled by nurse practitioner, nurse midwife or other advance practice nurse with or without a physician present. The CDC’s analysis shows the percentage of hospital outpatient department visits in which a patient saw a physician assistant or advance practice nurse increased from 11 percent in 1999 to 17 percent in 2009.
