OTC pediatric drugmakers, distributors claim ‘no widespread shortage’ in US

When senior leaders from large manufacturers and distributors of OTC pediatric medications had a conference call with FDA Commissioner Robert Califf and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra this week, they said there is “no widespread shortage” of OTC pediatric medications, despite continual reports of empty drug store shelves across the US, according to a Dec. 22 HHS press release.

Manufacturers said around-the-clock manufacturing and distribution operations are in full swing and that they are replenishing stores of these OTC medications “as quickly as possible,” the release said.

The meeting was one of many HHS leadership is holding with key industry players this winter, in an effort to combat the current surging triple threat of RSV, flu and new COVID-19 variants.

Secretary Becerra also met with hospital associations last week.
