Mr. Laret identified several challenges facing academic medical centers and medical schools, including reductions in education budgets, federal investments in medical research and clinical income.
Mr. Laret made several suggestions to combat these challenges, including the following, according to the release:
• Research. Mr. Laret called for more team-based research instead of individual efforts.
• Education. Mr. Laret suggested medical schools offer competency-based accreditation rather than time-based accreditation, and provide residency training across specialties.
• Patient care. Mr. Laret criticized the focus on inpatient care and its resulting inefficiencies, and encouraged integration of ambulatory care with other healthcare services, such as skilled nursing, mental health and rehabilitation.
• Academic culture and traditions. Mr. Laret said academics should have business training or experience to successfully manage a multi-million, large operation such as an academic department.
