Florida Commission on Public Hospitals Completes Final Recommendations; Says “Indigent Care” Districts Should be Reauthorized

Florida’s Commission on Review of Taxpayer Funded Hospital Districts has completed its final report of recommendations to lawmakers and is advising the state to require voters to reauthorize hospital districts that levy taxes every eight years, according to a report by the News Services of Florida in the Daily Record.

The commission also recommended that taxing districts be converted to “indigent care districts” and the hospitals they fund be made separate entities. The commission stopped short of recommending privatization of the public hospitals, which it had considered. According to the report, the commission was unable to definitively determine if private hospitals provide a higher quality of care
