The 60-year-old Grand Rapids man died June 21 at the hospital. Hospital officials initially treated the death as an internal matter, and a medical examiner determined the patient died naturally.

Mercy Health staff called police a day after the death to investigate, as the man was not hospitalized at the time of his death, according to the report. A Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office examination June 25 confirmed the death resulted from natural causes. Police closed the case after ruling out potential criminal activity, according to the report.

Mercy Health declined mlive.com‘s request for comment due to patient privacy laws.
