According to the summary, most respondents rated their hospitals high on teamwork within units and patient safety. Teamwork — defined by the survey as the extent staff supports one another, treats one another with respect and works together as a team — was rated with an average 79 percent positive response. On average, most respondents (73 percent) gave their hospital a patient safety grade of "A-Excellent" (25 percent) or "B-Very Good" (48 percent).

In addition, the survey reported three areas with potential for improvement by most hospitals. These areas were nonpunitive response to error, handoffs and transitions and number of events reported.

The survey also reported hospital trends by hospital and respondent characteristics.
