Patients who underwent an MRI scan were not exposed to any ionizing radiation, which is present in PET-CT scans and poses the risk of developing into secondary cancer later in life.
In the study, the PET-CT scans detected 163 of 174 malignant lesions, and the MRI scans detected 158.
Researchers suggest using whole-body diffusion-weighted MRI scans to stage cancerous tumors may help prevent long-term risks of radiation exposure from PET-CT scans.
