Medtronic received FDA clearance for its Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system for urologic procedures.
The clearance allows the system to be used in minimally invasive surgeries, including prostatectomy, nephrectomy and cystectomy — procedures that account for approximately 230,000 cases annually in the U.S., according to a Dec. 3 company news release.
Rajit Kamal, vice president and general manager of robotic surgical technologies at Medtronic, said in the release that the company is beginning a targeted U.S. launch with select hospitals. The system has been used in tens of thousands of surgeries across more than 30 countries on five continents.
