The incident occurred Dec. 6 at Amazon’s fulfillment center in Robbinsville, N.J.
An investigation found “an automated machine accidentally punctured a 9-ounce bear repellent can, releasing concentrated Capsaican [sic],” which is the main ingredient in pepper spray, Robbinsville Township spokesperson John Nalbone told ABC News.
Five local hospitals treated the employees, one of whom was in critical condition. First responders treated another 30 workers at the scene.
An Amazon spokesperson told ABC News all affected employees are expected to be discharged from the hospital within 24 hours.
“The safety of our employees is always our top priority and a full investigation is already underway,” the spokesperson said Dec. 6. “We’d like to thank all of the first responders who helped with today’s incident.”
