10 recent pharma layoffs

Becker's Hospital Review has reported the following 10 drug company layoffs in the past two months. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. Teva considers 10k job cuts to meet cost reduction goal of up to $2B
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is considering up to 10,000 job cuts, in a move to reduce expenses and ease its debt burden, according to Bloomberg

2. Merck to shutter facility in South Carolina, lay off 50 employees
Merck & Co. is planning to close its facility in Charlotte, S.C. resulting in the dismissal of 50 employees, according to the Charlotte Business Journal. 

3. Depomed slashes workforce by 40%, relocates headquarters following deal
Depomed, a pharmaceutical company based in Newark, Calif., will cut 40 percent of its workforce and move its headquarters after signing away its sales rights to its best-selling line of pain medications. 

4. Avanir Pharmaceuticals cuts 11% of workforce, including sales, reps amid probe into marketing practices
Avanir Pharmaceuticals will lay off 73 U.S. employees, or about 11 percent of its workforce, by the end of January as part of a sales restructuring plan, according to the Orange County Business Journal. 

5. Mylan lays off up to 300 employees
Mylan Pharmaceuticals laid off between 200 and 300 employees in West Virginia Nov. 9, according to West Virginia Metro News. 

6. 2.3k Eli Lilly employees accept buyouts
More than 2,300 employees at Eli Lilly's U.S. operations accepted voluntary buyouts as part of the drugmaker's plan to eliminate 3,500 positions worldwide by Dec. 31.

7. Amgen to lay off 200 research & development workers
Amgen, a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Thousand Oaks, Calif., will lay off 200 research and development workers by the end of the year.

8. Genentech to lay off 13% of workforce at California plant
Genentech, a biologics drugmaker owned by Roche, will slash 130 jobs or about 13 percent of its workforce at its Vacaville, Calif., plant as the company faces increased biosimilar competition.

9. Merck to lay off 1.8k sales reps: 4 things to know
Merck will eliminate three U.S. sales teams that promote drugs for primary care, disease-focused endocrinology and hospital chronic care.

10. Novartis will close US generics plant, eliminating 450 positions
Novartis will eliminate 450 U.S. jobs over the next two years during the gradual closure of its generic drug manufacturing plant in Broomfield, Colo.
