US News names 2017-18 Best Nursing Homes: 4 things to know

U.S. News & World Report released its 2017-18 Best Nursing Home rankings Tuesday.

Here are four things to know.

1. To compile the list, S. News assessed more than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide using data from CMS' Nursing Home Compare and ranked each facility on a scale of one to five, with one indicating a "poor" performance and five meaning "top performing."

2. Nearly 2,300 nursing homes earned U.S. News' Best Nursing Home designation, representing 15 percent of all nursing facilities in the nation.

3. California had the highest number of nursing homes on the list for the second year in a row. Ohio and Florida had the second and third highest amount of facilities on the list, respectively.

4. U.S. News also released its Nursing Home Finder tool, which offers information on patient safety, care quality and staffing, among other factors, for every nursing home in the U.S.
