CEOs of Aetna, J&J among 2017 highest-paid chief execs by state

Six of the top 10 states with the highest-paid CEOs were also among the 10 most populated states, according to a recent report by Equilar.

For the study, Equilar and the Associated Press analyzed the total compensation of the highest-paid CEOs at public companies in 46 of the 50 states. To be considered for the study, chief executives had to have served in their position with the company for at least two years and the company had to have filed a financial proxy statement between Jan. 1 and April 30.

Here are the four healthcare chief executives named among the highest-paid CEOs by state for 2017 by Equilar, ranked by annual salary:

16. Michael F. Neidorff, Centene — $25,259,468
19. Alex Gorsky, Johnson & Johnson — $22,995,564
25. Mark Bertolini, Aetna — $18,702,992
28. Hervé Hoppenot, Incyte — $16,087,031
