The Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation has recognized about 10% of the nation’s nearly 6,100 hospitals for supporting workers’ well-being and mental health.

As of May 22, the foundation has verified that 635 hospitals, plus 50 medical licensing boards and two payers, have removed “intrusive mental health questions and stigmatizing language” from licensing and credentialing applications.

Approximately 1.4 million licensed and 274,000 credentialed healthcare workers benefit from this effort, according to the foundation.

“By adopting practices that minimize stigma and encourage workers to seek the help they need, healthcare organizations can improve outcomes for both health workers and patients,” Corey Feist, the foundation’s co-founder and CEO, said in a statement. “This progress reflects a growing understanding that those who care for others have the right to care for themselves — without risking their careers.”
