Healthgrades has named 186 hospitals to its latest list of the nation’s best for surgical care, singling out a small share of the roughly 4,500 U.S. hospitals it evaluated on how patients fare after common inpatient operations.
The recognition is part of Healthgrades’ 2027 Specialty Excellence Awards, which rank hospitals using Medicare inpatient claims from the CMS MedPAR file for 2023 through 2025.
For the surgical care category, Healthgrades scored hospitals on 15 common in-hospital surgeries, including coronary bypass, valve replacement, total hip and knee replacement, colorectal surgery and hip fracture repair. The organization measured risk-adjusted mortality on five procedures and complications on the other 10. A hospital had to be evaluated in at least eight of the 15 surgeries to qualify.
Healthgrades estimated that if all hospitals performed at the level of its five-star facilities from 2023 to 2025, roughly 227,229 lives could have been saved and about 158,138 complications avoided across the conditions and procedures it studied.
For surgical care in particular, patients treated at top-rated hospitals saw markedly lower risk. Colorectal surgery patients at five-star hospitals in New York City, for example, were 81.8% less likely to die in the hospital than those at one-star hospitals.
