Idaho is the best state to live in, and New Mexico is the worst, according to an analysis published Aug. 10 by WalletHub.
The personal finance company compared the 50 states across five dimensions: affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life, and safety. Each dimension was worth 20 points, for a total of 100.
The company evaluated those dimensions using 51 metrics, ranging from housing affordability and unemployment to hospital system quality, life expectancy, commute times and violent crime rates. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the most favorable living conditions, and weighted individually. Each state’s weighted average across all 51 metrics determined its overall score and rank. Idaho scored 60.15, and New Mexico scored 41.42.
Data was obtained as of July 13 from sources including the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the FBI, the CDC and CMS.
