What Will Health Insurance Exchange Populations Look Like?

States have until Nov. 16 to finalize their health insurance exchange plans. While many states are wavering on their designs, who will actually gain coverage in these exchanges, and how will it impact hospitals?

A new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers' Health Research Institute profiles the demographics of the 12 million Americans who are expected to receive health insurance through the new exchanges, starting in 2014.

Here are seven things to know about the health insurance exchange populations, based on PwC's report.

1. The median age of someone shopping in a health insurance exchange will be 33.

2. Their median income will be 166 percent of the federal poverty level, or $38,263 for a family of four.

3. Eighty-six percent will not have a bachelor's degree.

4. Exchange participants are more likely to be single.

5. Spanish and other languages are more likely to be their dominant language.

6. Exchange beneficiaries are less likely to rank themselves in "excellent" or "very good" health.

7. Individuals are more likely to be black, Asian or other non-white races.
