MemorialCare Health System Launches Seaside Health Plan

MemorialCare Health System, a six-hospital network based in Fountain Valley, Calif., has launched its new insurance arm, Seaside Health Plan.

Seaside covers individuals and families who are enrolled in commercial plans, Medicare and Medicaid. It also covers dual eligibles. Seaside contracts with several California-based health insurers, including Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California, and it also expects to offer plans in California's health insurance exchange. Barry Arbuckle, PhD, CEO of MemorialCare, said he expects Seaside will initially cover 17,000 Medicaid and California Children's Services beneficiaries.

MemorialCare announced plans to launch the nonprofit Seaside last November. It purchased some assets of Universal Care, a health plan with members throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties, and the California Department of Managed Health Care gave the OK to sell health insurance.
