Illinois Medicaid Plan Would Shift $250M to Private Insurers

Looking to abate a nearly $3 billion Medicaid deficit in the state's budget, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has proposed reducing by $250 million the amount of Medicaid dollars spent on children with special health needs, shifting the cost instead to parents' private health insurers.

That plan will likely drive up premiums, according to a report in Crain's Chicago Business.

A provision in Illinois Medicaid eligibility requirements allows children with special needs to be on Medicaid if their parents are privately insured, but below a certain income threshold.
