Researchers searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Science from inception up to Oct. 5, 2017, and identified randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation in patients with acute COPD exacerbations. They found four randomized controlled trials with a total of 560 participants.
The study shows that vitamin D supplementation did not influence overall rate of moderate/severe COPD exacerbations. However, vitamin D supplementation did have a protective effect among participants with baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D less than 25 nmol/L, but not in participants with baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels equal to or greater than 25 nmol/L.
