Of the 1,234 cases, 125 people have been hospitalized, and 65 have reported complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis. Most people who contracted measles were unvaccinated.
New York state reported more measles cases than any of the 31 states that filed reports. More than 75 percent of the measles cases this year linked to outbreaks have been in New York. The state passed a law eliminating religious exemptions to vaccine laws for schoolchildren, which was upheld by New York state Supreme Court Justice Denise Hartman last week.
The U.S. reported the highest number of measles cases this year than in any year since 1992.
