US deadly fungal infection cases spike by 100 in two months

As of Oct. 31, there were 941 cases of deadly fungus Candida auris in the U.S., the CDC reported.

The number of cases increased by 105 since Aug. 31, when the case count stood at 836.

New York reports the highest number of C. auris cases in the country with 427. On Nov. 13, New York became the first state to publicly name the healthcare organizations that have treated patients for the deadly infection. Illinois and New Jersey follow New York in case count, with 263 and 149 cases reported respectively.

C. auris is hard to treat as it tends to be resistant to antifungal drugs. It can live on surfaces in healthcare environments and cause bloodstream, wound and ear infections.
