UPMC Shadyside, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh under boil water notice after water main break

Pittsburgh-based UPMC Shadyside and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC distributed bottled water to patients and staff under a boil water advisory issued Dec. 17, a UPMC spokesperson told Becker's.

On Dec. 17, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority experienced a "major" water main break. As a result, PWSA issued a precautionary boil water advisory to affected areas, as decreased water pressure can allow contaminants to filter into drinking water. UPMC Shadyside and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC fell under that jurisdiction.

Both hospitals remained operational and patient care was unaffected. The precautionary boil water advisory was in effect until Dec. 19, when PWSA lifted the ban.
