The scores are presented in a five-star format and are based on more than 40,000 patient surveys administered by Press Ganey. Patients evaluate physicians via nine questions that address in the following areas:

•    Likelihood of recommending physician
•    Confidence in physician
•    Time spent with physician
•    Physician’s use of clear language
•    Physician’s effort to include patient in decisions
•    Physician’s concern for questions and worries
•    Physician’s explanation of condition/problem
•    Wait time at clinic
•    Physician’s friendliness and courtesy

Each provider must have a minimum of 30 surveys for his or her scores to be posted so the information is reliable.

The hospital reviews comments before posting them, and edits them only to remove information that might identify a patient or be considered libelous or slanderous. So far, 99.5 percent of all physician comments have been posted unedited, according to the release.
