UChicago Medicine opens 1st-of-a-kind IBD-focused pregnancy clinic

UChicago Medicine has opened the first clinic of its kind in Chicago, and one of only a few nationwide, focused on preconception and pregnancy care for patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The clinic brings together gastroenterologists and maternal-fetal medicine specialists to help patients with IBD enter pregnancy in remission, manage complex medication decisions and reduce complications, according to a news release shared with Becker’s

It also uses intestinal ultrasound to safely monitor patients for inflammation, which can cause serious complications during pregnancy. 

Patients can receive care before and during pregnancy and have access to a multidisciplinary team including a psychologist, dietician and genetic counselor. The clinic also contributes data to national research on IBD and pregnancy outcomes.
