Surprise Joint Commission inspection identifies problems at St. Peter's Hospital

The Joint Commission recently surprised St. Peter's Hospital in Helena, Mont., with an unannounced inspection that revealed several shortcomings, according to the Missoulian.

A hospital spokeswoman told the local paper that none of the findings — including inadequate documentation in patient records, facility faults that failed to meet code and problems with the process medical staff use to pass grievances to their superiors — endanger patient safety, though they may increase the risk.

Following the accrediting agency review, the hospital fired "no more than two" staff members, St. Peter's CEO Nate Olsen told the Missoulian.

"Changes are made to ensure we're providing the highest quality and safety to our community," he said.

Mr. Olsen couldn't provide any additional details due to privacy policies.

The hospital has 30 days to show improvement in order to maintain its accreditation from The Joint Commission, according to the report.
